Rothko + Turrell Museum
Kansas State University Architecture school project - 5th year | 2nd semester
The Rothko + Turrell Museum is a project that will permanently house works by both Mark Rothko and James Turrell, as well as a space for a Changing Gallery.
The building was designed off of a concept contrived by the work of the artists. With the artwork produced by these artists, the space around the art, or the space that the art is contained within, is very important to how a person views the art. This idea was applied to the building in the way that the key spaces (the Rothko gallery and Turrell gallery) are very much affected by each other and the other spaces around them. The spaces around each gallery both shape the space and filter the light into the space in a very precise and deliberate way.

This sketch shows the organization of the museum galleries - how each space contributes and affects the spaces around it, especially how light filters down and around the galleries.
