Jemez Ranger Station Office
Jemez Springs, NM - Santa Fe National Forest (BRS Architecture)
The U.S. Forest service was in need of a new Ranger Station/ Offices/ Visitor Center to replace the existing facilities in the Jemez Ranger District. Additionally, a Fire Station and Warehouse were included in the design (as alternates) on this topographically challenging site.

The office building design drew from the materiality and style often seen in the archtiecture in the surrounding region. Stucco provides a heavy mass at the base of the building with weathered steel used as a contrasting material to the mass of the light stucco. The windows are a light turquoise color, which is a common treatment of windows in the Santa Fe region, and is believed to keep evil spirits from entering the building.

The interior office areas of the building are kept simple, open, airy, and light-filled. The wood structure brings in warm tones to the spaces. Offices and huddle rooms are mostly positioned in the center of the building to allow the open office area views to the outside. Selected areas will have large printed graphics potentially taken by a local photographer that help the interior to feel even more connected to the beautiful surroundings that the building is situated in.
